Singing Tree Kindergarten and forest school
Singing Tree at Christmas
Brighton Steiner School’s Singing Tree Kindergarten is probably the most picturesque daycare provision in the whole of East Sussex, looking out over the beautiful rolling hills of the South Downs which lie beyond the Falmer Village duck pond. With the bells of St Laurence’s Parish Church sounding out the day for us, the children that come here pass their childhood in a nourishing and idyllic setting. We have found that this has a profound and deep impact on them.
The Singing Tree Kindergarten is based in the Falmer Village Hall, ideally located close by the Amex Stadium and the A27 and between Lewes and Brighton. It has the feel of an old style village school. Every day has its own rhythm and incorporates adult-led time, snack time and free play. Each morning starts with a daily walk past the pond, with all its rich wildlife, and it continues on through the fields and nearby farm.
At Singing Tree Kindergarten great focus is given to encouraging imagination and play through activities such as watercolour painting, crafts, eurythmy, gardening and baking bread. Our space has been designed around Waldorf principles so as to nourish children with a natural and wholesome approach. Contact with plastic is kept to a bare minimum – if there is any at all. Our range of open-ended play equipment exists of natural materials such as wooden toys, cloth and simple objects found in nature like pine cones, conkers, leaves, etc, which allow children to embrace their imagination and develop their creative thinking skills: A cotton veil can be a dressing up cloak, a dress or a swaddle for a doll. A play frame can be a wall of a house or a secret hideaway space and so on.
Every Friday is our Forest School Day. Children love being outdoors and this day offers them the opportunity to enjoy a healthy balance to modern life by taking part in a whole morning of adventure, walks, games, play and crafts, and appreciating the passing of the seasons by eating our home-made soup over an open fire.
