Steiner Waldorf Schools

Steiner Waldorf Schools are self-governing, independent educational communities involving close co-operative working by parents and teachers who manage the schools’ resources and set priorities in the best interests of the children.

Steiner Waldorf Education

Wherever you go in the world and visit one of the 800 Steiner Waldorf Steiner Schools (2000) you sill find something of the same spirit and ethos in all of them. A child could move from one school here to another in a far country and feel at home. And yet Rudolf Steiner himself said that if he were to visit two parallel classes in the same school on the same day lie would hope to find something quite different taking place to each. There is indeed an overall curriculum, based on the ideas and indications of Steiner. Though it was never presented by him in detail. He expected teachers to be creative and to teach their lessons in an artistic way. whether science or humanities, movement, crafts or music.

The main principle behind the curriculum is that the work should meet the reeds of the children at the age and stage of development they have reached and nourish their whole being.

A full Steiner Waldorf education takes children from Nursery to age eighteen There are three main stages: Pre-school. Lower school (6—14) and Upper school (14-18).

A Brief History of Brighton Steiner School

The School came into being out of the determination of a small group of parents who wanted a Steiner education for their children in Brighton. In 1981 the first kindergarten class was stared and run by a qualified Steiner teacher. Two years later a very experienced Steiner class teacher started a pilot Class I in a parent’s house. By 1984 with more teachers and classes the confidence of the parents was enough to justify buying the first real home and the school officially opened its gates as the Brighton Steiner School. This was in a villa on Ditching Road in Brighton, close to the large school complex of Dorothy Stringer, Varndean and Balfour Schools.

The Steiner School continued to grow at an extraordinary rate, through the strength of some remarkable teachers, and through the unceasing efforts of The parents and friends. In 1986 a second house was bought, next door to the first, and these two adjoining buildings housed the school for the next 10 years. In May 1996 the school sold these two houses and bought John Howard House.
