The Lower School

All young children are naturally artistic, imaginative and creative. The Brighton Steiner School allows them to develop as individuals in a healthy and harmomious way. Our approach harnesses their curiosity and the investigative spirit of childhood, allowing them to develop as individuals in a healthy and healthy and harmonious way.

Class I Main Lesson

The Main Lesson

The children enter Class I at age six, when formal learning begins, and they stay with the same class teacher for the first eight years. A strong social bonding develops between the children and the teachers. A two hour main lesson each morning covers basic skills in maths, English, spelling, reading and writing, geography and the sciences, as well as exploring humanities, social, cultural and spiritual development through the study of myths, legends and the history of past civilisations. Learning is done in an active way through observation and practice rather than only through abstract thinking.

The Subject Lessons

Throughout the lower school, specialist teachers bring French and German from age six, as well as art, crafts, music, drama, games and dance (eurythmy); all integral both to the education and development of a rounded human being. There is no separation between the arts and sciences; instead, the emphasis is on bringing an imaginative and creative approach to every subject.
